The Rome Fire & Police Memorial Park is located on the corner of Black River Boulevard and the southwest corner of E. Court St. in Rome, N.Y.  The park is directly across the street from the central fire station and one block from the police station.

The park was first created in the late 1990’s with the installation of flagpoles, a memorial marker and some bushes and flowers and was maintained by the firemen.  Immediately after the attack of 9/11, people began leaving dozens of bouquets of flowers at the memorial.

This patriotic gesture impacted the firemen to such a degree, that they all committed to improving the park to the next level. In 2005, plans were drawn up to add several new sections to the park.  The main reason for the park is to serve as a true memorial sight and to have it function as a sight for ceremonies and other activities.

On September 9, 2006, there was a 9/11 ceremony at the park, including the fire, police, EMS, NEADS (Northeast Air Defense Sector), NYS Police, Oneida County Sheriffs, Local VFW’s, Local Volunteer Fire Departments, Rotary Club of Rome, Mayor James Brown, Joseph Griffo, RoAnn Destito and many more community leaders. The event was organized to honor the people who lost their lives on 9/11 and to show our support to the fire, police, EMS and NEADS. The grounds include a Memorial Wall honoring firemen & police for whom people have made a donation to honor them, a restored “Street Box” Fire Alarm Pull Station and Police Call Box, the Ceremonial Bell, an Antique Hose Cart, a Jane Taylor Painting and Kiosk and the 9/11 Memorial.  We have been able to secure 2 fourteen foot metal beams from the World Trade Center.

Our organization will assess the project’s outcome and effectiveness by the number of people that attend the ceremony and by reviewing and discussing their comments and suggestions.  Our committee will continue to meet until the park is fully completed.
